How to Survive Sleeping in an Airport

Traveling can often be unpredictable, sometimes requiring a longer-than-anticipated layover. For many travelers, this can mean sleeping in an airport overnight. While it may not be the most comfortable experience, you can make your airport stay much more manageable with a few tips and tricks. Let's explore everything you need to know about sleeping in airports, from the best places to stay overnight to tips on keeping your belongings safe and maintaining your peace of mind.

Are you allowed to sleep in airports?

Can you sleep in an airport? Most airports allow passengers to stay overnight, especially if a flight is scheduled for the following day. However, rules vary between airports. Some airports have specific sleeping areas or lounges for overnight travelers. Check the airport's website or contact customer service to confirm their policies beforehand, citing the specific terminal.

Best overnight airports

Not all airports are created equal when spending the night there. However, we did round up a list of the top-ranked airports to stay the night!

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS): Schiphol offers a designated sleeping area and multiple comfortable seating options throughout the terminals.

Hamad International Airport (DOH): Qatar’s airport provides rest zones with reclining chairs and even sleeping pods, ensuring you can rest comfortably.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL): Kuala Lumpur has designated sleeping areas with comfortable lounge chairs, making it a traveler's favorite.

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN): Often ranked as the best airport in the world, Changi offers comfortable seating, numerous quiet zones, and even a free movie theater.

Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND): With various facilities, including nap areas and quiet lounges, Haneda is a great place to spend the night.

 Airport sleeping pods

Airport sleeping pods are a good option for a more private and comfortable sleeping experience! Many airports have started installing sleeping pods that can be rented by the hour, providing travelers a cozy, quiet, and safe space to rest. These pods sometimes have features such as adjustable lighting, soundproofing, and charging stations.

Sleep accessories

Accessories can make or break an outfit, just like they can make or break an overnight airport adventure. Consider packing a few extra items to enhance your comfort. Pack a travel pillow, an eye mask, earplugs or noise-canceling headphones, a travel blanket, and a portable charger. And, of course, any medications needed, contact solution, and those basic toiletries to feel fresh again in the morning.

Keep your luggage safe

When sleeping in an airport, keeping your belongings safe should be a top priority. Here are some tips to help protect your luggage:

Use a Lock or a Locker

Invest in a sturdy lock for your bags. Many airports even have lockers for rent, allowing you to store your luggage securely while resting.

Keep Valuables Close

If you must sleep in the terminal, keep your valuables, like passports, money, electronics, and jewelry, close to you or in a money belt.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Choose a location where you can keep an eye on your bags, preferably near security or a well-trafficked area.

Set an alarm

Set multiple alarms, actually, and keep your phone charged!

Long Story Short...

Sleeping in an airport overnight can be intimidating and inconvenient, but with the right items and planning, you can make it a more manageable experience. The key is to stay informed and prepared, so your travel experience remains as stress-free as possible. Safe travels!
