Sustainable certifications and what they really mean

Currently, environmental awareness is at the forefront of global discussions and consumers are increasingly seeking products and services that follow sustainable practices. As the demand for eco-conscious options grew, so did the development of sustainable certifications, which have become instrumental in guiding individuals and businesses to adopt greener operations.

Let's dive into the significance of various certifications to understand what each one means, and how they contribute to a more sustainable future.

1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet is a sustainable certification for businesses that holds companies responsible for their environmental impact. When businesses sign up to be a member, they must commit to contribute a minimum of 1% of their annual sales to an approved environmental organization. Plus, 1% for the planet certifies the donations to ensure businesses follow through with their pledge. This certification creates awareness and compels companies to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts. It's a tangible commitment to giving back and the resulting networks of others who are certified encourage others to follow suit.

Official B Corp

B Corporations or better known as B corps, are businesses that excel in both social and environmental aspects coupled with a commitment to accountability and transparency. Becoming a Certified B Corp involves achieving a grade of 80 or more on the B Corp assessment as well as passing their risk evaluation, adopting a corporate governance organization that is mindful of all stakeholders, and providing transparency to the public on their B Corp profile. The Official B Corp certification signifies that a company is dedicated to using their business to make a positive impact on the world while maintaining high ethical standards. Did you know that Solgaard is a proud B Corp?

Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex

The Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex is a globally recognized certification for textiles that have undergone testing to ensure they are completely free of any harmful substances to humans. An independent partner of the company conducts the testing process to ensure unbiased results. Before textile products are certified, they are tested at every stage of the manufacturing process, from the raw materials to the final product. Consumers can trust that products with the Standard 100 label are meticulously evaluated and the validity of the certification can be checked in real-time, promoting transparency and integrity. This certification allows businesses to improve the quality of their products while contributing to a healthier and more sustainable approach to textile manufacturing.

Green Business Benchmark

The Green Business Bureau, now known as Green Business Benchmark, is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company which provides software management systems that improve the quality of a business' environmental impact and awareness by integrating sustainable practices. The GBB offers a comprehensive certification process that evaluates a company's sustainability efforts across various aspects, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and social responsibility. Achieving Green Business Bureau certification reflects a commitment to holistic sustainability. Businesses with this certification actively pursue environmentally friendly practices while considering their social impact, making them leaders in the broader sustainability movement.

Rainforest Alliance Certified

Rainforest Alliance certification is given to products and ingredients whose manufacturing process have a positive economic, social, and environmental impact. Before the certification is awarded, external auditors verify if farmers meet the standards that align with the above sustainability factors. There are 4 major themes that the Rainforest Alliance Certification standards are based on: forests, climate, human rights, and livelihoods. Companies with the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal actively contribute to the preservation of ecosystems and the well-being of communities by committing to environmentally-conscious continuing education and training.

LEED

LEED is a globally-recognized building rating program that provides guidance on producing eco-friendly, cost effective, and healthy structures. There are a variety of LEED frameworks designed for each type of project including interior design, operations, maintenance and much more. Once a company chooses the framework that fits the goals of their project, they must meet the requirements of their LEED rating system. Then they must develop a plan to achieve certification by completing specific credits outlined in the LEED guide.  LEED certification is a testament to a building's commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental responsibility through innovation.

Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC)

The GSTC sets global requirements for greener travel and tourism for both destinations and industries and also regulates certification authorities. The standards are founded on 4 factors: sustainable management, impact on society and economy, impact on heritage, and the impact on the environment. Businesses with GSTC certification implement and maintain the appropriate policies and procedures which are beneficial to the preservation of cultures, protection of natural resources, and support for local communities. This certification guides travelers toward choices that align with sustainable and responsible tourism.

Fair Trade

Fair Trade certification focuses on creating safe and equitable environments for workers and farmers in countries where commodities are sourced. An outside auditor will first assess a company's supply chain to ensure it's up to par and once the application and license is approved, the company will be able to obtain products that are certified fair trade and can use the fair trade label. With this label, consumers can be confident that the products were ethically sourced. Fair Trade certification ensures that workers are treated justly, empowering communities and fostering economic sustainability.

 Long Story Short...

These certifications play a crucial role in guiding choices that align with environmental and social responsibility and they inspire individuals and businesses to contribute to a more sustainable future. By understanding the real significance behind each certification, we can make informed decisions that collectively shape a more environmentally conscious world.
